Description

In a way, every performance deals with the question of ‘how to be together’. Essentially, the theatre is a situation aimed at creating a temporary community. Regardless of the type of theatre, a spectator always finds themselves in a certain community. This situation is even more noticeable at popular music concerts where a refrain can actually be a ‘call’ to sing – the singer stops and lets the crowd sing with one voice.

At a time when there is a crisis of representation, being together has become one of the principal issues for contemporary society, which evermore functions through temporary, fragmented, mobile and fluid bonds…

A group or community is considered in harmony when its members “breathe as one”. But how would a community literally breathing as one actually function? In the company of a person whose breathing is loud or noticeable, we soon realise that our personal line has been crossed and that we can’t resist the other person’s affecting us. Our breathing has to deal with a question: “To breathe as one” or to breathe one’s own way? A fundamental dilemma of an individual in a neoliberal society is how to maintain at least a minimum of social bonds in conditions where everyone is everyone’s rival.

Something’s In the Air only gives that which makes all of this possible. Something’s In the Air is an ode to the only thing we have in common – air. As long as we still have it!
