(Un)due patriotism
- Boštjan Narat
Whose is this flag, whose is this coat-of-arms, whose is this country and whose is this homeland? In this theatre essay author and performer Boštjan Narat explores the issue of patriotism based on two personal experiences with the country separated by two decades. This is a complex task – the same as understanding one's relationship with the community, tradition and your own origin. However, if the notion loses its complexity, we are left with an empty word left to violence or oblivion. And it seems that this is exactly what has happened to patriotism: those who claimed it have been transforming it into a motto of fear and violence. If you refuse to comply, they deny you this word and the right to use it. Boštjan Narat seeks to reinvent the notion of patriotism in all its multi-layeredness.
